Who we are

It all began with an open heart. Today, it is Diaconia’s story.

Hans-Rudolf Hintermann, founder of the Diaconia International Aid Association
Hans-Rudolf HintermannFounder of the Diaconia Association · 1989

Diaconia’s story in Romania began in 1989, through the heart and vision of Hans-Rudolf Hintermann. In Switzerland, he ran the Christian publishing house Verlag Hans-Rudolf Hintermann, which he had founded in 1958. After the fall of communism, seeing the poverty and suffering of people in Romania, he asked himself what he could do to help.

He wrote to the publishing house’s customers and invited them to donate clothing and food for Romania. Their response amazed him. Donations began arriving one after another, until they filled an entire railway wagon. Then came another wagon. And another. People did not stop giving.

In 1990, the first aid reached families, hospitals, children’s homes and other institutions in Brașov. Behind every shipment were people who needed to know they had not been forgotten. This is how the Diaconia International Aid Association came into being.

Hans-Rudolf Hintermann led the Diaconia Association until his death in 2021. His heart and vision began a mission that continues to this day. We have remained close to children and families, respecting each person’s dignity and story and seeking to restore their confidence in a better future.

We stay close where we can help

When life changes in an instant, no one should face it alone.

Behind every request for help is a person and a story worth hearing. We stay close, seek to understand their need and carefully look for the most suitable form of support. Sometimes this means medical treatment, food or clothing. At other times, it means materials to repair a home or financial help at a moment when they can no longer move forward alone.
