Education support
More than 200 children still receive a chance.
After the Day Centre closed in 2025, we continued to support children financially so poverty would not end their education.

Who we are

Diaconia’s story in Romania began in 1989, through the heart and vision of Hans-Rudolf Hintermann. In Switzerland, he ran the Christian publishing house Verlag Hans-Rudolf Hintermann, which he had founded in 1958. After the fall of communism, seeing the poverty and suffering of people in Romania, he asked himself what he could do to help.
He wrote to the publishing house’s customers and invited them to donate clothing and food for Romania. Their response amazed him. Donations began arriving one after another, until they filled an entire railway wagon. Then came another wagon. And another. People did not stop giving.
In 1990, the first aid reached families, hospitals, children’s homes and other institutions in Brașov. Behind every shipment were people who needed to know they had not been forgotten. This is how the Diaconia International Aid Association came into being.
Hans-Rudolf Hintermann led the Diaconia Association until his death in 2021. His heart and vision began a mission that continues to this day. We have remained close to children and families, respecting each person’s dignity and story and seeking to restore their confidence in a better future.

How we help →
One organisation, many forms of help
Each programme was created in response to a need witnessed directly in Romania.
Aid shipments from Switzerland supported families, hospitals, children’s homes and institutions.
Warm meals, homework support, counselling, hygiene, supplies, camps and a stable learning environment.
Twelve safe homes were built in Cristian for twelve families with partners and volunteers.
Vegetables and crops were grown and donated to families preparing for winter.
The herd grew to more than 200 cattle and was designed to help finance the Day Centre.
The Diaconia apiary produced natural honey for children and supported families.
A converted bus brought learning to isolated communities and later supported Ukrainian refugee children.
Donors, companies and international partners connect available resources with urgent local needs.
Our history
From humanitarian deliveries to education, housing and social enterprise, we have grown by listening to people and staying close to their needs.
International roots
Diaconia International Aid in Romania, Diaconia Internationale Hilfe in Switzerland and AMRO e.V. in Germany are independent organisations working together as partners. Through these partnerships, international solidarity becomes direct support for people in Romania.
Our independent Swiss partner connects humanitarian aid and sponsorship support with the work carried out in Romania.

We stay close where we can help
Behind every request for help is a person and a story worth hearing. We stay close, seek to understand their need and carefully look for the most suitable form of support. Sometimes this means medical treatment, food or clothing. At other times, it means materials to repair a home or financial help at a moment when they can no longer move forward alone.
Tests, treatment or recovery support for seriously ill adults and children.
Materials and support after fire, flooding, earthquakes or unsafe living conditions.
Food, clothing, heating and emergency financial assistance for families without immediate solutions.
